Thoughts on Woodturning

Working with wood is something that I find immensely satisfying. Wood is a wonderful medium. Each piece is different in colour grain and texture, Each piece is unique and beautiful.

My work is focused upon creating ornamental pieces and exploring simple line and form which amplifies the beauty of the wood. Many pieces are enhanced by the addition of other materials or by the combination of contrasting woods. Flowing line and proportion are critical in my designs which invite the observer to touch, hold and appreciate the tactile and visual beauty of the piece.

I live and work on Bribie Island. Bribie is a quiet island with some 20,000 residents an hours drive north of Brisbane . It is the only island on the Queensland coast joined to the mainland by bridge. It has a vibrant arts and crafts community fostered by the Bribe Community Arts Centre and Mathew Flinders Gallery.

Whilst I am self taught, I have learnt a great deal from other members of the Bribie and District Woodcrafters Association. The association has in excess of 150 members and caters for all forms of wood crafting. Further details may be found at www.bribiewoodies.org.au
